Tax cuts in 2001 and 2003 under President George W. Bush were followed by increases in the saving rate among the rich, according to data from Moody’s Analytics Inc. When taxes were raised under Bill Clinton, the saving rate fell.
The findings may weaken arguments by Republicans and some Democrats in Congress who say allowing the Bush-era tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans to lapse will prompt them to reduce their spending, harming the economy.
In the Metro NY on Tuesday, they include a box that pointed out the following:
When tax legislation was signed by Clinton in 1993 — raising the top tax rate to 39.6 percent from 31 percent — the saving rate fell from 12.1 percent in the second quarter to 9.5 percent in the first quarter of 1994.
When the first Bush tax cuts became law in June 2001, pushing down the rate to 35 percent, the wealthy boosted savings. The saving rate climed to 2.8 percent in the first quarter from minus 2 percent in the second quarter of 2001.
History shows tax cut for the rich lead to increased savings, not increased spending.
According to the GOP, the only stimulus America needs is no taxes on the rich–as Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, and their ilk will tell you–a virtually tax-free rich class will create jobs!
NYC, which now has more than 666,000 millionaires, has over 22% of its citizens living in poverty, according to the New York Public Library…and the NYC Center for Economic Opportunity, indicated that the poverty rate rose by 1.4 percent between 2006 and 2008, contradicting the declining figures shown in federal studies.
One of the biggest drivers of the city’s poverty rate — which sat at 22 percent in 2008, the last year the study was conducted — is the high cost of housing. Despite the economic downturn, rents and the cost of homes in New York remain among the highest in the nation.

A drunk barged into a Queens mosque last night and urinated on prayer rugs, cops and witnesses said.
Evening prayers were disrupted at the Iman Mosque on Steinway Street in Astoria when the unhinged man “came in with a beer bottle in his hands, clearly very intoxicated,” said Mustapha Sadouki, who was attending services.
“He fumbled over to our rugs where people were praying” and then committed the despicable desecration, Sadouki said,
The man, identified as Omar Rivera, had allegedly been drinking for five days, a police source said — and when found by worshipers, told them: “My sister’s dead.”
He then stumbled out onto the sidewalk, where he was grabbed by two members of the mosque who called 911 and held him until cops arrived, the source said.
Cops took him to a hospital and later charged him with criminal trespass.
“He stuck up his middle finger and cursed at everyone,” said Sadouki, 43.
“No one can pray now because the rugs are completely soiled. It was disgusting.”
